One thing’s for sure – the beginning of Mononoke is as intense as any live-action movie I’ve seen in quite some time. Keep reading for my full review there will be spoilers, as always. But the film is not without its flaws, and I think the praise Mononoke has received may be a tad bit overblown. So what’s the verdict? I definitely enjoyed Princess Mononoke, and I’d even go as far as to call some scenes amazing.

From the comments I received on my Ponyo review, it appeared that Princess Mononoke was the consensus pick as Miyazaki’s best film, and so I was pretty excited when it arrived via Netflix a couple of days ago. My wonderful readers have made some terrific recommendations in the past – most notably on Primer and Timecrimes – so it goes without saying that I’m always eager to check out what you guys consider great. I look forward to having the chance to see more of Miyazaki and Ghibli’s work. After watching and being thoroughly impressed by Ponyo, I was interested in seeing more films created by Hayao Miyazaki. I appreciate being able to experience a movie/story without outside influence. The movie managed to surprise me at every turn. I thought I had learned quite a bit about it through cultural osmosis. I have seen a lot of clips and pictures out of context. The thing that surprised me the most is how little I knew about this movie. I just hope this isn’t the Miyazaki movie I enjoy the most that would not reflect well on his other films. Even though the story wasn’t anything new, the movie still held my attention the entire time. Just a Japanese spin on Industrialization vs Nature, the forest vs the humans, magic vs science. But the story is nothing particularly special. And the characters were all very well rounded and three dimensional in personality (at least, the ones that had real bearing on the story).ĭespite all that, I do hope that people were wrong about this being the Miyazaki movie I’d love the most. It felt very natural in the setting, and played with the visuals. The score, by Joe Hisaishi, was wonderful. I definitely understand why Studio Ghibli receives constant praise for its visuals. What few scenes there were of slow pans across scenery were done to highlight the setting of the movie, not simply to fill time.

Being a theatrical release, it doesn’t run into the same problems as television anime series. One of his more famous works (at least in the United States), I’ve heard from a lot of people that this would be the Miyazaki movie I loved the most. It is, however, only the second Miyazaki movie I have ever seen (the first being Ponyo dubbed). This is not the first Miyazaki movie I have ever seen.
